Getting Started: Doctorate and Postdoc Phase
Your doctorate marks the beginning of your academic career. The subsequent postdoc phase, which typically lasts up to three years, focuses on orientation and strategic career planning. Many researchers use this time to gain new perspectives and often change institutions during this period.
There are many paths leading to a professorship. Discover all the possibilities now!
Paths to a Professorship
1. Tenure-track Professorship
After a successful evaluation, outstanding early-career researchers may be appointed directly to a W3 professorship at KIT via a tenure-track professorship. (Link auf Text https://www.kit.edu/forschen/tenure-track.php)
2. Assistant Professorship (W1)
The assistant professorship promotes early academic independence. A subsequent appointment to a W3 professorship is possible if, following the completion of a doctorate, the candidate has changed universities or engaged in at least two years of external research activity.
3. Leadership of a Junior Research Group
Leading your own research group qualifies you for a W3 professorship, provided the evaluation is positive. At KIT, this can be combined with a W1 professorship (KIT Excellent Tenure Program).
4. Experience in Industry
In some departments, such as engineering, professional experience outside of KIT, for example in industry, can also contribute to qualification for a professorship.
5. Habilitation
In many disciplines, habilitation is a traditional path to a professorship. It can be pursued in addition to other career paths, such as a junior professorship or leadership of a junior research group.
Alternative Career Paths
Permanent Academic Positions at KIT
Outstanding achievements in research, teaching, or innovation can lead to a tenured position at KIT, for example as a Recognized Scientist with opportunities for advancement to Established or Distinguished Scientist (including habilitation). Under certain conditions, leaders of junior research groups also have the prospect of a long-term career path as an Established Scientist.
A Career in Research Management
In addition to professorships, KIT offers a wide range of career opportunities – for example, in the coordination, strategic development, or management of research projects and research-related administration.
